Laura and Justin (also known as Mocho) are an American couple that moved to Melbourne, Australia in February 2012. Justin works with Save the Children and travels throughout South East Asia worrying about poor urban children and managerial efficiency. Laura works for, well…she isn’t sure yet! In the meantime, she hopes to explore the laneways of Melbourne and write children’s books about worldly Wombats.

You may be wondering why our blog is called Smuggling Budgies. There’s no great explanation really. We wanted something that was memorable and hinted at the Australian focus of our blog. Budgy Smugglers is the term Australian’s use describe Speedo-style men’s swimwear. While we don’t plan on a) smuggling any real budgies, or b) posting photos of Justin in such swimwear, we do plan to share the Australian joy for life and make some feathered and furry friends during our two-year adventure.

You’ll make it there before we will! If you have any pointers on the Australian language or cultural differences after your return, please share them with us. We’re worried that our culture shock will be challenging considering the major cultural differences between the United States and Australia.
